Sally Campbell - 'The mother and the other: involuntary childlessness through the lens of horror'

Sally Campbell will be looking at a type of character that is rarely discussed: the woman who desperately wants to be a mother but can’t, whether through infertility, pregnancy loss, or simply not having a partner. These characters are driven to monstrous behaviour – or more accurately, they are portrayed as monsters who must be slain. From Peyton in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle to Beverly and Elliot in Rachel Weisz’s remake of Dead Ringers, Campbell examines these characters in the context of a society that tells women to want a family and then damns them if they resort to any means necessary to get one.

Sally Campbell is an editor by trade and is based in London. She has just completed a Master's degree in Film and Screen Media at Birkbeck College, University of London. Formative teenage experiences include being served a tiny chicken for Christmas dinner, while watching Eraserhead on VHS with her family.
