Workshop: My Monstrous Mirror - Video Essays and Horror Memoir

Sunday 11th February / 14:00 / City Kino Wedding

Workshop 3: My Monstrous Mirror - Video Essays and Horror Memoir

Ariel Baska

In this presentation, multiply disabled and queer horror and documentary filmmaker Ariel Baska (they/them) will teach participants the basics of creating a video essay as a horror memoir. Ariel will share a work sample of Monstrous Me, their video essay about their relationship with cinematic monsters while forming their disability identity. Using Monstrous Me as an example, they will lead a workshop on the art of autobiography using video essay as a form. Ariel will lead participants in activities to reflect on their first experiences with horror, starting with writing memories, drawing remembered images, and pulling source material clips from YouTube. Ariel will discuss all aspects of the process, including editing, effects, sound, and writing tools that are instrumental in working within the format.

Ariel Baska is a multi-award-winning, multiply Disabled queer horror and documentary filmmaker, who believes in advocacy and accessibility for historically underserved communities. Their work has played on Alaska Airlines, at the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon, and at film festivals from Berlin to Mexico City to Mumbai. They have presented at SXSW (South by Southwest) on various topics in disability and accessibility in the film and television industry, and are the creator and festival director of ACCESS:HORROR, a film festival and industry summit celebrating the history, future and impact of disability and horror.

Their work can be seen in many places, but their creative multiverse is most visible through Ride the Omnibus, their own non-profit and podcast parked at the intersection of pop culture and social justice (200+ episodes strong!) .

Regardless of what story they're telling or what work they're doing, they care passionately about the margins.
